TWO ENGINEERS from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Adam Gilmore and Sabrina Singh-Gilmore visited Alabel National Science High School, August 16, 2010 as part of NASA’s Science Caravan “Reaching for Your Stars” program.

Adam Gilmore, 33 works for NASA as a Division Chief Engineer for the Space Shuttle Programme at Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas, USA.

Adam leads a team whose responsibilities include structures, mechanisms, materials, re-entry and on-orbit thermal protection for the Space Shuttle Orbiter.

He showed videos of a space shuttle launch and re-entry and demonstrated the space shuttle’s aerodynamics and other details about ensuring a successful flight in space.

Sabrina Singh-Gilmore, 30, on the other hand, is an astronaut trainer at NASA.

She trains astronauts on the space suit and other gadgets important to astronauts for their space walks and other extra-vehicular activities in space.

Sabrina discussed the preparations they make before going to space and showed to the students how life is like in the International Space Station.

She also allowed the students to put on the space suit and see real food that astronauts eat in space.

Both speakers generously answered the students’ questions in a manner similar to an interactive classroom discussion.

“We were really impressed,”  Sabrina and Adam said after their presentations, “the students asked excellent questions. ”

Daniel John Florence delos Reyes, III-Einstein, was very happy with his interaction with the NASA Team.

“Their presentations were very informative. They encouraged me to perform well in my studies so that one day I may be like them. I’m sure a lot of students have been encouraged as well. It’s different when you get the information first hand,” he said.

The NASA team also visited other places in the country but Atty. Arnel Casanova, Executive Director of Asia Society said,” You are very lucky because this is the only place in Mindanao that the NASA Team visited.”

ALABEL NATIONAL Science High School was awarded as Top Performing School in the National Achievement Test (NAT) SY 2009-2010 during the Regional Secondary School Principals Congress, July 8, 2010 at The Farm, Carpenter Hill, City of Koronadal, South Cotabato.

As the Regional Science High School for Region XII, ANSHS got the highest Mean Percentage Score (MPS) among all secondary schools in the region with an MPS of 77.28.

Most of our students belong to the upper 1% of all the takers in the whole Philippines.

The  NAT is an examination on Science, Mathematics, English, Filipino, and Araling Panlipunan administered to Second Year students every February.

CARMENCITA A. KUAYA, Alabel National Science High School principal was awarded Most Outstanding Principal by the Department of Education Region XII during the Regional Culture of Peace and Arts Culmination Program held at the FitMart Convention Center, City of Koronadal, South Cotabato on May 28, 2010.

Four other teachers from ANSHS were also given certificate of commendation for their excellent performance as teachers and leaders in their respective fields.

Shiela P. Butil was awarded Outstanding Secondary Teacher III and Outstanding Coach; Dexter C. Necor received the Outstanding Secondary Teacher I; Aleli E. Dasmariñas was chosen as Outstanding School Paper Adviser and Daniel D. Zabala as Outstanding Scoutmaster.

One of the major components in selecting the outstanding principals and teachers is the improvement of students’ academic performance as measured by the National Achievement Test Results, in which ANSHS garnered the highest mean percentage score in the region.

The first was won by students John Lord Saloria, Jewelle Mae Solijon, Jorge Alberto Ilejay, and Arianne Louis Agulan, who outsmarted students from other regions in the Robotics Challenge by winning 2nd Place.

Physics teacher Ariel Lalisan won First Place in the Microteaching Competition in Applied Science, where he delivered a computer-assisted lesson.

The National Science and Mathematics Summit is an annual gathering of the 17 Regional Science High Schools in the Philippines.

This year’s theme is “Culture of Innovations and Best Practices in Science and Mathematics Education.”

The research team, composed of Kareen Joy Amlon, Catherine Dominique Andales, and Eune John Joshua Butil was coached by Shiela Butil.

Of the 122 qualifiers, 48 are from Sarangani, while 74 are from schools outside Sarangani.

The pupils listed in the PDF files below must submit themselves, together with their parents, for an interview on February 6, 2010.

Enrollment will follow right after the interview.

One hundred and forty three of the qualifiers are from outside Sarangani, while 84 are from the different elementary schools in Sarangani.

The qualifiers will take another examination on Saturday, January 16, 2009 at the ANSHS campus.

The Best Performing School was selected based on the test results of the National Achievement Test (NAT) and National Career Assessment Examination (NCAE) in the last three years, improvement of school facilities, character and competence of faculty, and community involvement, among others.

School principal Carmencita A. Kuaya received the plaque of recognition and a cash prize of Php 10, 000 during the Search for Outstanding Sarangan Awards Night, November 27 at the Provincial Gymnasium.

The award was given as part of the celebration of Sarangani’s 17th Foundation Anniversary and MunaTo Festival 2009.

The research team composed Catherine Dominique Andales, Kareen Joy Amlon, and Eune John Joshua Butil champed in the Intel Philippines Science Fair-Regional Competion, while amother research conducted by Kristoffer Asetre and Arrianne Luis Agulan won as first runner-up in the Regional ASEP, both held in General Santos City.

Both teams were coached by Shiela Butil and Dexter Necor.

In the 2009 Regional Mathematics Olympics held in Esperanza, Isulan Kudarat, the team quizzers for first year, second, and third year levels were all declared champions.

First year quizzers Irish Pearl Carman, John Lord Saloria, and Trent Laurence Galvez; second year quizzers Jewelle Mae Solijon, Hanna Suganob, and Maria Karen Jeane Pliego; and third year quizzers Jorge Alberto Ilejay, Mifflin-Rae Calvero, and Maria Karina Degoma topped their respective categories.

They were coached by Jojet Cordero, Jasper Santos, and Margie Quimosing.

Meanwhile, Christine Joy Medida outranked the quizzers in Sarangani in the Division Elimination of the 30th National Super Quiz Bee Science and Technology category.

She was coached by Ariel Lalisan and will represent Sarangani in the Regional elimination in December.

The ANSHS Entrance Examination is a two-phase screening process: 1) Written Examination and 2) Oral Examination.

The First Phase is scheduled on December 12, 2009 at the ANSHS Campus.

Only the top 200 in the written examination will quality for the Second Phase, which will be held on January 7-9, 2010.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

1. The examination is open for Grade VI pupils who:

• belong to the upper 10% of the graduating class
• have no grades lower than 85% in English, Science, and Mathematics  and not lower than 83% in other subjects in the 1st and 2nd Grading Periods
• possess good moral character
• are not more than 15 years of age by June 2010

2. The following must be submitted not later than November 30, 2009:

• duly accomplished application form
• Photocopy of Form 138-E/ School Report Card, showing grades as of the 1st and 2nd grading periods
• Php 100.00 as testing fee
